The North Canton Lions Parade will be held on May 28th, at 9:00am. There will be a Memorial program in Bitzer Park following the parade. Please plan on attending in memory of our Veterans.

North Canton Swimming Pool to be Open Memorial Day Weekend!

The North Canton Swimming Pool will be open May 26,27, and 28th. The pool will be closed May 29th-June 1st, and will reopen on June 2nd.

Mayor’s 40th Annual Fishing Rodeo to be held June 2, 2012

Mayor David Held wishes to announce the 40^th Annual North Canton Mayor’s Fishing
Rodeo, sponsored by the North Canton Eagles, will be held Saturday, June 2, 2012, at Price Park Pond.

Registration for all participants will be held at Price Park from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. the day of the rodeo. Fishing competition will run from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Prizes will be given and refreshments will be served. All children, ages 2 to 12 who live in the North Canton School District, are invited to join in the rodeo competition and fun.

This year’s rodeo will once again be under the direction of Brian Hill of the City of North Canton Park Department and the North Canton Eagles.

Spring Yard Waste Recycling Program April 17th – May 25th, 2012

The City of North Canton’s Spring Yard Waste Recycling Program will begin April 17th and run through may 25th, 2012.

Bags may be purchased at local retailers. Please put yard waste paper bags at the curbside on your regular trash day. Note: If yard waste is in plastic bags it will go to the landfill with your regular trash.

THERE WILL BE NO FREE PAPER BAG HAND OUT.

2012 Season Dogwood Swimming Pool Passes on sale May 14, 2012 and Opens May 26, 2012.

The 2012 Dogwood Swimming Pool passes go on sale May 14, 2012. They can be purchased by going to North Canton City Hall located at 145 North Main St, North Canton during normal business hours of 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday. Please Note: The Dogwood Pool will be open: May 26th, 27th and May 28th. Closed May 29th, 30th, 31st and June 1, 2012. The Pool will then resume normal business hours Saturday June 2, 2012 for the 2012 Season.
Swimming sessions at the North Canton Dogwood Pool are as follows:
SESSION 1: June 11 to June 22 (Monday thru Friday)
Screening: June 9 from 1:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.
June 10 from 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M
SESSION 2: June 25 to July 6 (Monday thru Friday)
Screening: June 23 from 1:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.
June 24 from 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.

TWO NEW PART TIME POLICE OFFICERS ADDED

Mayor David Held and Chief Stephan Wilder welcome two newly sworn in part time patrolmen to the police department.

Cody Dollinger is a 2005 Lake High School graduate, has an Associate Degree in Justice Studies from Kent State University and is a graduate of the Stark State Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy. Dollinger has served at the Waynesburg Police Department.

Matthew Buzzard is a 2004 Jeromesville, Ohio Hillsdale High School graduate, has his Bachelor of Science Degree from Ashland University, inducted into the National Criminal Justice Society Alpha Phi Sigma and is a graduate of the Stark State Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy. Buzzard has served at the Minerva Police Department.

Programs at the North Canton Civic Center to bolster arts in the community.

The North Canton Civic Center will be the scene of a series of five monthly arts programs beginning in February and concluding in June 2012, supervised through the agency of The Canton Museum of Art. The program proposal was made to North Canton City Council in January by the Museum’s Executive Director, M. J. Albacete, and was unanimously endorsed by Mayor David Held and council members, using funds provided through a generous grant from the Tri-County Joint Solid Waste District.
All programs will take place at the North Canton Civic Center at 845 West Maple Street, beginning at 7 pm. The first program is scheduled for February 23rd, featuring members of The Canton Ballet, introduced by Artistic Director Cassandra Crowley.
Admission is free.

The following are the only holidays observed by J & J Refuse Service for 2012:

Memorial Day – May 28th: Trash will be late all week, one day, with Friday on Saturday.
July 4th – Wednesday July 4th: Trash will be late, Wednesday through Friday,one day,with Friday on Saturday.
Labor Day – Monday September 3rd: Trash will be late all week, one day, with Friday on Saturday.
Thanksgiving Day – Thursday November 24th: Thursday and Friday will be one day late with Friday on Saturday.
Christmas Day -Thursday December 25th: Trash pick up will be late Tuesday through Friday with Friday on Saturday.
News Year Day – Tuesday January 1st, 2013: Trash pick up will be late Tuesday through Friday with Friday on Saturday.

Flood Information: Three Areas of Concern and Updates

Three Areas of Concern and their Updates:

Zimber Ditch

- This is a regional issue with the majority of the Zimber Ditch and the associated drainage area falling outside of the City of North Canton; hence, we are working with the other affected communities.

- The County Engineer’s Office has taken the lead in this effort and we have been involved in several discussions. Most recently, we have met with the engineering firm that performed the Zimber Ditch Study and Recommendations in 1997. They are reviewing the improvements that have been made since the study and will be proposing additional improvements.

- Storm Water Management – Stark County’s storm water management criteria has been updated and been made more restrictive. The City of Green (Summit County) also has more restrictive storm water management criteria. This includes the area occupied by the airport.

- The affected agencies are keenly aware of the flooding issues along the Zimber Ditch and will work with any development within that area to minimize additional runoff.

Sanitary Sewer Backflows:

- We will be seeking funding to develop a sanitary sewer model to be able to analyze of sewer system and enable us to make effective decisions on improvements to the system.

- We are researching programs offered by other sanitary sewer agencies to have backflow preventers installed in residences experiencing problems.

- We are developing a residential survey regarding sanitary sewer backflows. This information will be mapped onto our GIS program and compared to the drainage basins. This will help us to determine areas of concern and to prioritize action plans.

- Inflow & infiltration of storm water into the sanitary sewer system (I&I) causing the sanitary sewers to overflow and creates to backflows. The city has spent over $600,000 over the past 2 years and has applied for $500,000 for next year to address I&I issues in the main line sewers. This effort will be ongoing. However, I&I in the sewer laterals (from the house to main line) is an issue that needs to be addressed. A program to rehab the laterals will be researched. Note the laterals are the responsibility of the homeowner.

Fairways Golf Course:

- A consultant has been hired to develop options for this issue.

- Field survey has been completed to supplement the county’s aerial mapping.

- Soil borings will be taken to determine the soil characteristics.

- The storm sewers in the area are being cleaned and TV’d.

Fairways Study

A study is currently being conducted regarding water runoff from the Fairways Golf Course to include a look at the storm sewers in the area. The City has hired a firm that specialized in this type of work.

Task Force for Flooding Issues

The City is waiting for the Army Corps of Engineers for their input and advice. The City has also been contacting those entities along the Zimber Ditch in order to set up a multi-jurisdictional task force regarding flooding issues.
